Azteca Mexican Restaurant Kuwait – Review

My favorite type of food is Mexican food. I’ve been to many many Mexican food places in the United States. I taught myself how to make home made Mexican food because Kuwait is lacking in good Mexican restaurants to eat at. Sure we have Sultan Center’s ChiChi’s on the gulf road, but their food is pretty lackluster.

When I heard of this new Mexican place called Azteca opening up at the village (next to Upper Crust Pizza), I couldn’t wait to try it! So me, my two friends, and my brother all went there for lunch.

The place is small. There are about seven tables on the inside and three or four tables on the outside of the restaurant. When we walked in, the table where we were going to sit was still dirty. We called a waiter over to clean it up and he did so promptly. There were only two waiters working, but that’s enough for only seven tables.

We went ahead and ordered our food and drinks. About 15 minutes later (which is pretty long to wait for drinks) we received our drinks, but we didn’t receive any chips and salsa. Every Mexican food place I have ever been to has always served complimentary chips and salsa, but when the chips and salsa didn’t arrive we asked the waiter about it. He told us there were no complimentary chips and salsa. Weird!

Another weird thing is that this Mexican restaurant does not serve Enchiladas.

So 40 minutes pass since we sat down and we didn’t even get our appetizers or a soup my friend ordered. A family to the left of us came in 10 minutes after us and had already received their appetizers.

Just then, two plates of beef fajitas came out and they put it down on our table, thing is, we never ordered any fajitas! We called the waiter over and told him that we didn’t order fajitas, and when he was re-reading the ticket and what he had ordered, to our surprise it was completely different. The waiter completely messed up our order. We even told the waiter the numbers for some of the items but he still messed it up! We asked for the manager.

The manager comes over and apologizes to us and re-takes our correct order. Meanwhile, since we were so hungry, we went ahead and ate the fajitas that they served us. The beef was not hot, it was room temperature and some pieces were not warm at all. Most of the pieces I ate were also chewy. The beef was flavored well, but the chewiness and lack of being hot hurt the overall taste.

So we’ve been sitting at Azteca for 1 hour 20 minutes and still no appetizers and no soup that my friend ordered. We start to get impatient and vow that if the food does not come in another 10 minutes we were going to leave. We call one of the waiters over and tell him that my friend needs his soup at least. Honestly, how difficult is it to spoon some soup into a bowl and serve it? The table beside us with the family had already gotten their main dishes and were eating, and a table behind us who came in not too long ago got their apetizers already, and we still didn’t get anything of what we ordered except our drinks!

So right when its 1 minute before we are going to leave, four burritos that we ordered came out. One of my friends opens up the burrito and finds that it is filled with rice and beans and has very little beef.

I’ve had many many burritos before and do know that they add rice into them as a filler, but never have I seen or eaten a beef burrito where there majority of the contents was not beef! My other friend plucks a piece of beef out of the burrito and says that its dry!

He gets mad, as well as all of us do, and calls the manager over. He shows the manager that there is very little beef in the beef burrito that he ordered and the manager just apologizes. We tell her that we’re done and we’re leaving. She apologizes again and then we left.

To me this is completely unacceptable. If Azteca was not ready to open then they shouldn’t have opened. What we did get to eat was not that good and the beef burrito was stuffed with rice more than beef really pissed my friend off.

Who knows? Maybe the restaurant was having issues since its the first day of opening up. My friend said that in a couple months we should come back and try again. Maybe I will, but for now Azteca gets a bad score.
