Imagine having to pay for accessing content to download that you can access for free from torrents. That’s basically what Usenet is.
All throughout my nerdy usage of the computer and Internet I always heard about Usenet. A service that allows you access to content to download (usually pirated things). I never tried it because I thought it would be a waste to pay for something that I could easily get for free through torrents. But curiosity got the better of me and I signed up for a Usenet service called Giganews.
Within a couple hours of using Usenet I cancelled my account.
Why?
1. It’s overly complicated to find the downloads you want. With torrents you can arrange by most seeders, but it’s not like that with Usenet. You search for what you want and then you get a long exhaustive list of available downloads and you have to figure out yourself which is best to download.
2. There are no reviews so you can’t check if a download is good or not.
3. You have to pay for it. The Giganews rate was $17 for the first three months and then after that it would’ve cost $30 a month.
I could see the appeal maybe back in the late 90’s but now Usenet is obsolete. Torrents are more efficient, quicker, and free to access.
